How AI Expand works
AI Expand generates new content around an existing image to continue the scene. Use it to adapt a landscape photo to a square layout, fill empty areas around an image, or create more room for your composition.
Choose Auto to fill the image’s frame, or Manual to control which edges to extend. No prompt is required.
Note: Each generation uses AI credits. The cost depends on the selected model and the number of formats being processed. Check the amount displayed before generating.
Where to find AI Expand
Open your design in the Abyssale Design Builder.
Select the image layer you want to expand.
In the right-hand panel, set Image → Fitting to Contain.
Click Expand in the AI action bar at the bottom of the canvas.
Important: Expand is unavailable for images using Cover. Switch to Contain first.
Choose your expansion mode
Auto: fill empty margins
Select Auto to extend the image into the empty areas left by Contain. For example, a landscape photo in a square frame may leave space above and below the image. AI Expand generates content to fill those areas.
The formats icon next to the Auto and Manual controls lets you choose the scope:
Off: expand the image for the current format.
On: expand the image across all design formats.
Each unique width and height requires a separate AI generation. The total credit estimate updates when you turn this option on.
Manual: choose which edges to extend
Select Manual, then adjust the four sliders:
Left and Right add space on either side.
Top and Bottom add space above or below the image.
You can extend one edge or several edges at once. Leave a slider at zero to keep that edge unchanged, and use the preview to check your selection.
Tip: The generate button remains disabled while all four sliders are set to zero.
Select an AI model and generate
Click the model name to open the model selector.
Choose a model and review the displayed AI credit cost.
Click the purple arrow to generate the expanded image.
Wait for the result to appear in the preview.
Review and apply the result
Check the new areas and how they connect to your original image before applying the edit.
Click Apply Expand to use the result on your selected image layer.
Click Download to download the generated image.
Use the back arrow to return to the previous step.
The image on your canvas is updated when you click Apply Expand.
Reuse the action for future generations
After applying an Auto expansion, Abyssale offers to reuse the AI action when generating assets:
Save this AI action: enable automatic expansion for future generations, using the selected model.
No thanks: keep the image edit without enabling automatic expansion.
You can find the automatic setting in the right-hand panel under AI generation → Expand. Manual expansion applies your edit without this additional step.
Note: The all-formats On/Off option controls the current operation. Save this AI action controls future asset generations.
🧾 Things to note
AI generates the added areas, so review new details and edges before applying the result.
If the result needs improvement, try different expansion settings or another model. Each new generation uses AI credits.
You can undo an applied edit in the Design Builder. Undoing the edit does not restore credits already used for generation.
